If you are interested in growing your own organic food then now is the time to stop just thinking about it and go and act on it. Gardening can be very difficult but the basics are absolutely simple and container gardening makes it even easier. You can also be sure that your produce is 100% organic as you are not mixing in with any local soil.
An alarming amount of food can be grown in containers and almost any kind of vegetable can be grown with easy instructions plastered by enthusiasts all of the internet.
Basically you need a container with a few drainage holes in the bottom. You then fill that with good quality organic soil and compost and plant your seeds. Wicker baskets, plastic containers, old boots, bathtubs, literally anything will work!
This makes container gardening incredibly useful for city dwellers or those with a small amount of space. Window boxes can produce loads and if you fill your patio or balcony then it’s unlikely you will need to do very much shopping for vegetables and some fruit.
Many people have also taken to growing whole gardens in containers on their rooftops (check that your roof can take the extra weight first).
Obviously it’s not quite as simple as throwing some seeds into the soil and waiting, some veggies require certain spacing and special care but get the basics down and you can build up.
A great starter plant is tomatoes. They are very very versatile for cooking, taste awesome if organic and will grow very well if you give them enough sunlight.
Lettuce, green beans, green onions, squash are other great starter plants.
Go and talk to your local garden centre, get some organic seeds and get started today!
