Organic Gardening, The Tools For The Job

Gardening has been made extremely complicated over the last 50 years or so. Us humans have been gardening for 1000′s of years in one way or another.

With the popularity of organic gardening growing I am glad to say that the simple approach to garden is coming back. Gardening really isn’t that hard. Basically treat your plants like pets. Feed them and their soil, give them ample water and sunlight and even sing to them if you want. Some people swear that helps!

You probably have the water and soil (although it could be made much better) and you can’t do much about the sunlight but there are some other very basic tools that you need to get going.

Heavy Duty Gardening Gloves
Gardening can be very demanding on your hands. Just a few minutes of gardening without gloves and you will have pains and bleeding coming from your poor damaged hands. Plants are much hardier than they pretend! Also when you are moving large pots, clearing rubbish or touching plants that emanate irritating sap you will be thankful for your gloves.

A Full Size Garden Fork and Shovel
A Fork is essential and the shovel will make digging holes a lot easier. Forks can be used to turn compost, soil and dig dig it awkward plants. Just don’t cut your toes off!

Hard Shoes
If you are going to be using forks and shovels then there is a risk that you may stick them through your foot. Steel capped boots or wellington boots are not essential but an almost must have for anyone who likes their feet attached to their body.

Small Trowel
Your trowel will be like your little sidekick in the garden. Carry it with you at all times as it’s helpful for your containers, any small holes or tidying up edges around your flower beds.

Large Watering Can
Using hoses are bad and in water sensitive areas you may even have a ban on. The trusty old watering can is perfect for the job though and will save a ton of water. It will also put less pressure on delicate plants and save them from being damaged.

Small Pruners
Like the trowel the pruners need to be on hand at all times. You will constantly be finding dead matter or overgrown plants that need cutting back. Also they are handy for cutting chicken wire and plant ties or taking cuttings to grow into new plants or give away.

That’s just about it to get you started.
